Carl’s Vespa and a late model Honda collided the afternoon of Nov. 17, 2016. Officers cited the 79-year-old driver of the car, with failure to yield. (Kelly Lyon)
They use a lot staples here.
They use a lot staples here.
Today marks two weeks since Carl was hit by a car on his way to work on his Vespa and broke his leg, arm and back.

He probably will be leaving the hospital at the end of the week to enter a skilled nursing facility. This will give him time to heal and build his strength before entering Oregon Rehab Center, AKA: Boot Camp.

The orthopedic care staff at RiverBend hospital has been wonderful.

Carl continues to be moved by the outpouring of concern and encouragement in visits, calls, notes, letters, emails, texts, and Facebook posts. They are a source of great comfort to us all.

Physical therapist Erica Wilczek’s compassion was motivational during rehab at Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend on Dec. 1.

  1. Hello Davaz family, friends, coworkers and pets, one of our boys is down and my heart goes out to you all. Thank you for keeping us informed. Love to All David

  2. Life certainly slowed you down the hard way. Maybe work on a book! So happy you are surrounded by perfect people.

  3. Carl: I’m sitting almost exactly two floors above you with my Dad in Room 8127. When I get a break, I will try to stop in and wish you well in rehab. I have no doubt you will redesign several of their systems to be more efficient while you are at it!

  4. So glad to hear you’re on the mend, Carl. We’re sending you good wishes from North Idaho!

  5. Carl, sending best wishes for your recovery, and glad to know you are in good hands, and surrounded by friends and family. I was on the edge of my seat until the first update from Reed. Thinking of you every day!

    • I’ve been in a fog. I’m really tentative about everything having to do with moving the slightest bit. I haven’t been doing much of anything as I’m pretty much on my back, in pain. The biggest source of my discomfort is the broken femur. Even though it has been “fixed,” a small blood clot has amplified the sensitivity. There was a time during Thanksgiving week when things were really overwhelming.

  6. Gosh darn Carl, it looks like you got a zipper for Christmas. I know this looks overwhelming but each day is a progress. Pace yourself and do t get discouraged. The healing will come. So glad you are in good hands. Love to you all. Stay strong.

  7. Carl, you’ve never let anything stop you. You’ll get through this. Those staples are amazing.

  8. Carl! You beat DTI install and you will beat this too! Be well my friend!!!! You are strong and have a lot of will to get through this!!!

  10. Carl, Kim and Family,
Wishing you all the best as you navigate this unexpected challenging journey. So glad for good care and wonderful supportive family and friends!!! What an edition to your personal news page that you will hopefully be able to archive in the next few weeks. Offering most positive thoughts and anything else that may be helpful to your family. Hugs!

  11. Dang Carl! At least you can now walk into any bar and throw down with, “The time I had to lay down my Vespa,” story. Rehab will be a bear, but keep in mind you’ve got lots of friends out here pulling for you.

  12. Carl, I’m so glad to hear you are on the mend. my thoughts and prayers are with you every day. When my mom broke her femur I watchedher go thru rehab ,it was a long process but she healed perfectly. Hang in there, you are in my prayers. Hope to see you up and moving soon.

  13. Hey, Carl, here’s hoping you get out soon, and don’t start setting off metal detectors everywhere with those staples!

  14. Dear Carl, we love you very much. Tony was devastated when he saw the headline that morning after and I had to talk to him because I knew you just had to be ok. Jesse sends his love too. he said he wanted to pick you up and hold you. .. I am sorry for all the pain, I hope it subsides quickly. I’m glad you’re going to physical therapy, I know how great that medicine is. Get well soon! Love, the Israel Borrie family
